Installing and Testing FCPUTIL

FCPUTIL is normally installed in the FCServer folder of your server and it can be run from there. However, it is not necessary to run it from there. For example, you may wish to execute FCPUTIL from the computer that is running your backup software.
In any case, FCPUTIL uses FCP protocols and a regular FirstClass settings file to communicate with the server.

FCPUtil Requirements

To run FCPUTIL, the application must have a configured settings file named fcputil.fc in the same location as the executable and the application must have access to the FCP folder containing the same fcp protocol file that was used to configure it.
In the previous section you were asked to note the protocol file that was used when configuring the settings.
If you have installed both Server and Internet Services on the machine, then the FCP folder is installed in the FCServer folder. However, if you have only installed Server, then the FCP folder is missing so FCPUTIL must locate the FCP protocol file elsewhere. If you have installed the FirstClass Client on the computer that will be running FCPUTIL, then it will find the FCP protocol file in the shared files location for FirstClass.
I have always found it easier to manage if I include the FCP folder with the correct protocol file in the same folder as FCPUTIL.

Testing FCPUTIL

To test FCPUTIL, open your command interpreter and navigate to the folder where you have FCUPUTIL.exe installed and enter the command
FCPUTIL MCHECK
This checks to see if you have a Mirror installed and whether or not it is running. It does not matter if you are using a mirror or not. This command will tell you if you are, and what the status is.

Common Errors

Some Typical errors might be:

  • Login error 1003. (invalid userID or password)
  • Login error 1044 (invalid server address)
  • Login error 1204 (invalid protocol selection - missing FCP file)
