Multiple E-Mail Addresses for Users

With FirstClass it is possible to have multiple domains running on the one server and with this comes the possibility to have several different e-mail domains for each user or different domain names for groups of users.

Domains  can also be set up for groups of users through clustered IS. This is a different way of setting up domains. this document will concentrate on setting them up through one Internet Services

There are several ways to can organise these domains.

1.  Have a standard overall domain that all use
2.  Use a full address in the user information form and  using a secondary domain that points to the IP address on Internet Services
3.  Organise domains by Organisational unit, specifying the domain at group level and adding users to the relevant group.

Setting up a domain in General

There are a few general points that must be done in all 3 of these situations to get a domain up on a FirstClass Server

1. Register a domain or domains with an ISP.
2. The MX record for the domain or domains must point to the IP address of your Internet Services machine

When the domains are registered the setting up process can begin

Standard Primary Domain

1.in Basic Internet Setup in the general tab set up type in the main domain

2. Enter an alias in the user information form

3. By putting just the alias in here the user will have the email address tfoley@maindomain.com

4. If an alias on its own is entered it will assume the domain of the primary domain name if there are no Organisational Units present

Secondary domain that points to the IP address on Internet Services

Assuming that there are secondary domains setup that point to the IP address of the Internet Services machine. Assuming secondarydomain.com and thirddomain.com are all pointing to the IP address of the Internet Services machine

Method 1. Using the full alias (including domain name) on the User Information Form

1 With this method the secondary domain does not have to be set up anywhere but in the user information form

2 Add in the full e-mail address (including the domain name) to the user information form

4. It will only send from the first address listed which is in this case tfoley which translates to tfoley@maindomain.com.

5. To change the address that the account sends from the sending address has to be changed to the first one listed

In this example the mail would be sent from tim@secondarydomain.com but mail would be received from all three

Method 2. Using Groups as Organisational Units

Secondary Domains can be specified in a particular group also. If the group is a designated OU (organisational unit) a domain can be entered in so that it will overwrite the main domain with reference to the primary alias.

1. Set an Organisational unit level in a group.

2. In the service tab for the group specify a specific domain for this group (it also has to be registered with an ISP and the MX records have to point to the IS machine)

3. By setting the domain in this help desk group all members of this group will have the default alias of alias@groupdomain if no specific domain is specified in the user information form

4.  This example will now give the email address of tfoley@groupdomain.com assuming the user has been made a member of the relevant organisational unit.
