Electronic Licenses Explained

What does the extension mean on my license file?

.KEY

These are stand alone non-demo server licenses. You can only have one .KEY for a particular FirstClass server since it represents the unique server serial number.

.LIC

These are regular user licenses, session licenses, Text To Speech licenses, server upgrade licenses, high capacity (or MP) option licenses, and/or unified communications option licenses. These are keyed to your specific server license, so administrators should ensure they note their proper server serial number (log in as admin via the FirstClass client, click on the Admin menu at top, then choose System Profile).

Regular user licenses versions do not correspond to the server version, so for example you can add 8.3 version regular user licenses to an 8.0 server.

A good thing to do with your .KEY and .LIC files is to append what they actually contain to their file name.
For example, if you order a 1000 regular user license and you receive a file named 55235352.LIC for example, rename the file to 55235352-1000USER.LIC.

As a general rule, licenses starting with 108 are upgrade licenses, while licenses that start with 19 are user licenses.

How do I obtain new licenses?

Contact FirstClass sales. You can reach sales by phone at 1-888-588-3444 or by email at sales@firstclass.com.

How do I obtain a replacement license if the one I received is damaged?

Contact either FirstClass sales or support. Support contact information will have been provided to you or can be provided to you by sales once Maintenance and Support is verified.
We will need the exact server file name that you received (i.e. 2355233.lic) in addition to your server serial number (log in as admin via the FirstClass client, click on the Admin menu at top, then choose System Profile).

What if I want to start a fresh post office and don't have the original licenses?

Contact either FirstClass sales or support. Support contact information will have been provided to you or can be provided to you by sales once Maintenance and Support is verified.
We will need a list of your licenses on the current post office, so it is best to have this list ready when you contact us.
See the next section for how to obtain this.

What licenses do I have?

In version 8.3, using the 8.3 client, this information is more conveniently located now in the Admin/System Profile, Licensing tab.

Prior to version 8.3, you can obtaiin a list of your licenses through the following method.
To find out what licenses are part of your post office, shutdown the FirstClass server at a convenient time, then run FirstClass Tools.
In FirstClass Tools, choose the Diagnose menu, then Diagnose Volumes...
When the FirstClass Diagnostics window appears, click on the Configuration Information tab.
Scroll to the bottom of the window and you will find a list of the licenses that are part of your post office.
You can save this information by clicking on the Save As... button.
You will then be prompted to save the information in a text file which you can use a text editor to view (and copy and paste the license information).
Exit FirstClass Tools and start the FirstClass Server.

How many user and session licenses do I have and how many are in use?

To find out what regular user and session licenses are in use, log in as the admin via the FirstClass client, then choose the Admin menu, then System Profile. When the System Profile window appears, click on the Users tab.
At the bottom you will see a summary of your regular user, session, and Text To Speech licenses. In addition, you will also see a summary of remote users.
