I have long admired half hull models. They are beautiful three dimensional objects that look great on the wall and convey much more about a hull than any painting or photograph. I have always wanted one of Arioso (my C&C 34) but could never justify the cost. Shortly after I purchased her I ordered the lines diagram of the C&C 34 from South Shore Yachts, thinking that it might make a good piece of wall art. The diagram that I received however appears to be a bad photocopy of a bad photocopy and not suitable for framing. So the diagram sat rolled up on a shelf for six years. Recently, my interest in getting a half hull of Arioso was revived. I pulled down the diagram and decided that I would take a crack at making my own. The story continues on the link below.
I am fortunate in having friends on Cape Cod who have Catboats and take me sailing on them. I am quite fond of these beautiful boats. Having had some success with the C&C 34 half hull, I decided to try making a half hull of a traditional Crosby Catboat. The link below tells the tale of that project.
I have been commissioned to produce two catboat half hulls suitable for use as trophies for the Casco Bay Rendezvous. To see the progress, click on the link below.
When Terry and I went down to the 44th Annual Catboat Association Meeting in Newport RI, my buddy Rick asked me if I could produce a 1/24th scale plug from which he would attempt to make a mold. From this mold he would then make trophies. This is a bit different from the other half models that I have made in that the foils have to be attached to the hull, there is no backboard, no painting as such and the whole thing has to be polished to a glassy finish. In late November, I bought a Marshall Sandpiper catboat in partnership with two friends on Cape Cod. I made three identical Marshall Sandpiper half models to commemorate the purchase and our partnership in PER CAT.
The Bass River Catboat Rendezvous Committee (of which I am a member) is planning on introducing a new race this summer. I volunteered to make a 1/12th scale Marshall Sanderling half model to be used as a trophy. CLick on the link for details.
